Approval expected for Britwell demolition plan

The long-awaited regeneration hopes for the notorious Britwell estate near Slough will move one step closer, when the Slough Council approves demolition plans as expected today.

The Jolly Londoner pub, the old library and the car sales site in Wentworth Avenue are all set for the wrecking ball, providing the plans are approved, along with a swathe of residential properties.

New council properties are to be built on the sites, the construction of which is intended to begin as soon as the demolition contractors have finished their work.

The council's assistant director for environment and regeneration, John Rice, said everyone - from council officers through to residents - was in support of the plans.

"I am asking cabinet to approve the demolition of the existing buildings on these sites so we can quickly move to build new homes for the residents of the Wentworth Avenue flats," he said.

"Residents have told us again and again that getting [them] out of the flats and demolishing this local eyesore should be our priority and, if agreed, we will be moving quickly with the demolition and securing the sites ready for the new homes."

The Britwell estate was hastily constructed after WWII, to house Londoners who had been bombed out of their homes in the city. In the past it has had a notorious reputation for petty crime and has been used as a set in film and television productions to represent a futuristic dystopia and 1980s trouble-wrecked Belfast.
