Biggest demolition machine in UK to bring down Glasgow flats
Next week will see the arrival of the tallest ultra-high-reach demolition machine to Glasgow.
Standing at 65 metres, the machine will be used by demolition contractors to demolish three blocks of high flats in Broomloan Court, Ibrox. Due to its enormity, the demolition machine is being transported in three parts and will be assembled on site at the Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) flats.
The process will take the demolition contractors nine weeks to complete and is part of ongoing regeneration projects in the Ibrox and East Govan areas of the city. "The area has already benefited from the demolition of more than 400 tenements, with 600 tenants being rehoused," said Karen Thomas of Clydeview Housing Partnership LHO.
Each block stands 21 storeys high and a total of 285 flats will be demolished. The local residents have been engaged in the process and kept up to date with the latest developments by the GHA.
The bringing down of the high flats is said by the GHA to be a further sign of their commitment to delivering improved social housing to the community. The site was selected for demolition in 2006 on account of low demand and increased running costs.
