Brewery demolition aims to aid Burton regeneration

Plans have been submitted for the demolition of Burton's old maltings tower and surrounding buildings, to make way for new business development by its owners.

The site is owned by international brewery giant, Molson Coors, which has submitted an application to East Staffordshire Borough Council to have demolition contractors take down the tower, as well as the demolish the bottling plant, the maltings office and the distinctive steel vessels and tanks.

It will contribute to an over-arching £75 million regeneration plan for the town, which aims to bring new infrastructure and jobs to the region.

"The planning application is the first step to hopefully realising our ambitious investment plan for our Burton brewery, which we unveiled earlier this year," explained Jeremy Derbyshire, the general manager for the Molson Coors Brewing Company in the region. "That plan, which commits an additional £15 million per year over five years to modernise the site, will give us the industry-leading infrastructure that will allow us to adapt to a changing beer market"

The demolition process has been set out to take place in phases to minimise the disruption to the working brewery. The contractors who have devised the demolition plan have said that explosives will not be used in the demolition, and that extensive noise assessments will be carried out in order to minimise disruption to the surrounding area.
