Contractors preparing to demolish Peterborough pub

Demolition contractors are preparing to begin work on a boarded-up pub in the centre of Peterborough, to make way for a major retail regeneration project.

Plans have been submitted by developers Hawksworth Securities to demolish the former Six Bells pub, on the corner of Westgate and Bourges Boulevard. It is hoped that the demolition of the pub will jump-start the stalled shopping centre project, which was put on the back burner at the height of the financial crisis in 2009.

The chairman of Bristol-based Hawksworth, Peter Breach, said that the long-term plan for the site was still to have the new retail development there but, in the short term, they were looking to put it to use as a car park or car wash.

"We have been involved in North Westgate for a long time and now we are working hard on it, though there are a number of ownerships of land in the area and we are not currently in the easiest economic environment," he said.

The pub was formerly known as the Rat and Carrot and was closed in 2002 and immediately earmarked for demolition.
