Council proposes to demolish hundreds of homes

Nottingham City Council has announced plans for the demolition of around 930 council homes.

Under the proposals, the Council will demolish two blocks of high-rise flats, as well as housing built in the 1960s. Tenants of Lenton and Radford flats and the Meadows housing estate will be re-housed and compensated, the Council said.

Demolition of the high-rise flats would make way for 200 new homes under the plans, which, if approved, will begin in April 2012. In all, the Council proposes to build around 500 new homes and bungalows over five years.
It claims that demolition work on the flats will be more cost-effective than improvements as the heating system and windows would all need replacing.

Nottingham City Council argues that current council housing is unbalanced, with a surplus of smaller flats and a waiting list of larger families waiting to be housed.

Councillor Alex Ball, who is responsible for housing and regeneration, said, "We need to make decisions for the long term for the whole of Nottingham.

"There will be more appropriate houses for the families and households that we have in the city."

Some residents told the BBC they would be keen to “leave today” if they could but others said they didn’t want to leave their home or community.
