Council seeks bids for Telford demolition contract

Bids are being sought for a £3 million demolition contract that will mark the start of work on a £250 million regeneration project in Telford town centre.

Telford and Wreckin Council is inviting bids for the preliminary work on the Southwater project. They intend to transform the area into a modern plaza containing new civic offices, as well as restaurants and a hotel.

Planning permission for the scheme was granted in March and council bosses now face the task of finding a company that can fulfill the intricate requirements of the demolition work.

The intended location for the development spans the town park and the Telford Shopping Centre, including Southwater lake and ice rink. The contractors must be able to ensure that the shopping centre remains free from disruption for the duration of the demolition.

The required works will include infilling the existing Southwater lake, accommodation works, earthworks, drainage and highway construction. Companies wishing to bid for the project have until 16 August 2010 to submit their proposals.

Consideration is currently underway of the bids for the design and installation of the multi-utility services for the first phase works to create all the infrastructure needed to progress with building.
