Date set for Liverpool's Everyman demolition
Demolition contractors are to begin work on Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre on Monday, 22 August.
The iconic theatre on Hope Street is to be demolished to make way for a brand-new three-storey theatre complex. Liverpool & Merseyside Theatres Trust is currently going through the bidding process to find a contractor to build the £13.5 million project, but are getting on with the demolition in the meantime.
Invitations to tender for the contract will be sent out on the same day that the demolition work begins. Whoever is taken on will also build associated office and rehearsal space for the new theatre, as well a loading bay for rear access from Arrad Street.
The redevelopment project is part of a £28 million overhaul project by the trust, which will also include feasibility work on the Playhouse theatre in Williamson Square which it also owns and operates.
The inside of the Everyman has been completely gutted already, after a sealed auction held last month saw people invited to bid for their own souvenir for the building, including seats, benches, and pillars.
The new theatre project is making swift progress: the theatre only closed for the last time on 2 July this year, and the new complex is scheduled to open in mid-2013.
