Demolition approval allows for link road construction
The demolition of a listed building in Blackburn has been approved, allowing work to go ahead on the long-awaited link road project.
A former police house, the building is in the path of the town’s orbital route and had prevented the construction of the section between Wainwright Bridge and Montague Street, the Lancashire Telegraph reported. But this issue has been resolved as the Department for Communities and Local Government granted the right to demolish the building, which is located on King Street.
Councillor Dave Harling told the paper, “This is fantastic news. We are delighted that the Government has listened to local opinion. This is what the council wanted and what local people wanted.”
He added that the construction of the link road will provide another “major piece in the town centre jigsaw”, noting that it will open up the whole side of the town for regeneration. Indeed, the multi-million pound link road is to play an important part of this transformation as the council plans to develop the area into a mixed quarter, with residential housing, businesses, shops and public spaces all within a short distance of each other.
