Demolition begins at Laindon tower blocks

Demolition work has begun on Essex tower blocks which have been described as “troublesome”.

The Royal Court tower blocks on King Edward Road in Laindon are being pulled down to make way for 76 new housing association properties. The demolition work is expected to take around two months in total.

Residents of the tower blocks were moved to alternative accommodation a year ago and locals have expressed relief that demolition work has finally begun.

One resident who lives opposite the tower blocks told the Basildon Recorder that she was delighted to see action being taken. She said it was good to know the area was being regenerated and that the changes would be good for the community.

Another local resident called the tower blocks an “eyesore” that he would be glad to see the back of, adding that as he has children he was relieved to see the area improving.

Frank Tomlin, the councillor responsible for housing, told the newspaper, “This has been a long time coming and I am pleased progress is finally being made on the project. We are regenerating Laindon and replacing the blocks with much more high-quality family housing.”
