Demolition begins on Sir Paul McCartney's birthplace
Demolition contractors have begun work on the old Liverpool hospital where former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney, was born.
Walton Hospital was closed last December and is to be replaced with a new mental health centre, to be run by the local Mersey Care Health Trust. The news 85-bed facility will provide mental health services for people living in Liverpool, Knowsley and south Sefton.
Local company LSHP is responsible for both the demolition and the construction work on the site. The company's chief executive, Graham Pink, said that getting the demolition work underway was a great start for the new development.
"As a company, we are committed to providing first- class health and social care buildings which improve people’s health and wellbeing in our communities, and are really proud to be working with Mersey Care on this prestigious project," he said. "We know this is a project which will make a big difference to the lives of many people in Merseyside."
The hospital was not only the birthplace of the 69-year-old former Beatle, in June 1942, but also the workplace of his mother, Mary, who worked as a nurse on the maternity ward, prior to and after his birth.
The replacement medical facility is due to open on the site in 2013.
