Demolition begins on Soham church hall

Demolition work has got underway on a church hall in Soham after a lengthy period of indecision.

Plans to develop St Andrew’s Church Hall on the town's High Street have been in the pipeline since it was sold back in 2008.

However, the recession put paid to the original proposals, leaving the hall with an uncertain future.

Amber Homes purchased the hall in 2008 - which had already stood unused for around ten years – with the intention of building 13 properties on the site, but had both its applications turned down.

The limbo period had officially come to an end this week, however, as demolition contractors moved in on Monday to begin knocking the hall down.

Some local people were not happy about the outcome such as Soham resident Jackie Hibbert, who claimed that the demolition of the hall would be "bad for the community".

"I think something like shops would have been a better option if the hall really had to be demolished but I think the hall should have been looked after in the first place and it wouldn’t have had to have been knocked down," he remarked.
