Demolition contractors begin Bangor Uni arts centre works
The students have moved out for the summer, so the demolition contractors have moved in to Bangor University campus to carry out the first stage of work on the new arts and innovation centre.
The old Theatr Gwynedd will be the first target of the wrecking ball, followed by the Students' Union building and Time nightclub, after necessary preparatory work is carried out at the Deiniol Road site.
The project is being directed by the university's acting vice chancellor, Fergus Lowe, who said everyone was extremely pleased that work was underway.
“We are very excited that work has started on such an important project that will be a fantastic asset for Bangor and the surrounding area," he said.
“The whole team of contractors are working closely with Gwynedd Council, other key organisations and local residents to ensure that as little disruption as possible during the demolition and construction processes."
He said they were on track to begin their construction at the end of this summer, anticipating a completion of the building works in summer 2012. The centre will then be fitted out with its specialist equipment in anticipation of an official launch in the winter of 2012.
The local contractors are using noise and dust reduction measures to minimise disruption and there are no anticipated road closures or additional traffic lights during the demolition.
