Demolition contractors to finally begin work in Denny
Demolition contractors are finally beginning work on a rundown part of the centre of the Scottish town of Denny, some seven years after regeneration work was first proposed.
Two off the decaying 1960s blocks on Church Walk in the town will be partially pulled down over the next 12 weeks, with two more blocks to be torn down in January 2012. Falkirk Council gave the go-ahead for the work this week.
The council's leader, Craig Martin, said that the action had been driven by the strong demand for change that had been expressed by impassioned local people.
"We are pleased that the local community has persevered and can now see the start of the real work to transform the centre into a modern and attractive location," he said. "There will be some disruption to traffic in and around the Duke Street and Davies Row areas and but we believe that this temporary arrangement will be worth it in the longer term."
Local ward councillor, John McNally, said that they were pleased that the demolition would soon be getting underway, but the real reward will be in what comes next.
"It's all very well knocking down a small part of Church Walk and seeking a pat on the back after a seven-year delay," he said. "However, that is the easy part, what the people of Denny want to know is, when we will see construction rather than destruction."
