Demolition nears for iconic car park

Demolition work is drawing near for a car park in Gateshead which featured in a classic British movie.

The building – which was made famous in the 1971 gangster film 'Get Carter' starring Michael Caine – is to be replaced by a supermarket and entertainment complex.

Final preparations are being made to the land surrounding the car park, with a specific date for demolition due to be decided on in the next three weeks.

The redevelopment – which is part of a wider £50 million town centre building scheme – has been agreed between Gateshead Council and supermarket giant Tesco.

Gateshead Council leader Mick Henry said: "The car park has dominated Gateshead’s skyline for 40 years and has been a constant talking point for the different opinions of those who either love, hate or are indifferent about it."

He added that there was still "much interest in the architecture of the site", and acknowledged that its presence in the famous film had brought Gateshead "much attention over the years".

As well as the Tesco supermarket, the site will incorporate 40 small retail units, accommodation for over 1,000 students and various restaurants and cafes.
