Demolition of Northamptonshire flats drawing closer
The demolition of a development of Northamptonshire sheltered accommodation flats for elderly people is moving ever closer, with more and more of the occupants being successfully rehoused.
The blocks in Nippendale, Rushden, now has just eight residents in it and owners, Spire Homes, are stepping up their efforts to find suitable new homes for the remaining people.
The owners have applied for permission to demolish the ageing block and rebuild the site with 41 new homes, incorporating a number of bungalows specially designed for disabled or elderly people. Spire Homes have said that the existing two-storey blocks of flats, bedsits and garages are outdated and do not meet the housing needs of local people.
The demolition plans for the site are awaiting approval from East Northamptonshire Council's planning department.
A spokesman for the company said, "Those who have already been moved have been moved to within the local area so that they can maintain contact with their local GPs and people from their local community."
He explained that they were making sure that no one was left alone during the clearing of the block. The spokesman added that once the site is empty, the demolition will be carried out as soon as possible so as to prevent any antisocial behaviour.
