Demolition on Wales flats to begin
The long-awaited demolition of a run down council estate in Wales is set to begin in the coming weeks.
Overlooking Cardiff Bay, the flats in Penarth Heights were voted the ugliest unique eyesore in Wales by respondents in a poll conducted by Beautiful Britain magazine.
Recent years have seen the estate become increasingly unsightly, as it became targeted by vandals, thieves and squatters.
Construction work on new houses and apartments – around 20 per cent of which will be affordable homes – is set to begin in October with a completion date of 2018. Meanwhile, the demolition contractors are busy taking down the buildings.
Paul Church, the councillor for St Augustines and a member of the Vale of Glamorgan council, said it will be "wonderful" for the area to be rid of the eyesore.
"It's been a long time coming to this phase and obviously people have been fed up with the way the buildings have deteriorated over the years and I think it's fair to say just about everyone will be really glad to see them demolished," he commented.
It was announced in April that Crest Nicholson would be building the new houses and apartments.
