Demolition paves way for new Accrington mosque

Demolition contractors have brought in an industrial 'muncher' machine to make way for a new mosque development in Accrington.

The demolition of the current mosque on the junction of Higher Antley Street and Fountain Street in the Lancashire town got underway this week, having been granted planning permission earlier this year.

Construction of the new mosque will get underway as soon as the site has been full cleared. It will see a new, three-storey mosque built in its place, featuring decorative minarets and a dome. Local councillor, Munsif Dad, said that the new mosque will be hugely appreciated by many people in the local community.

"This is something that we need and something that the area needs as well," he said. "The mosque has a few hundred members and the vast majority of members live within walking distance of that area."

The building that is being demolished had formerly been a church, but has been used as a mosque for many years. The new building will follow a similar schedule as the previous one provided, but with added spaciousness. The ground floor will provide prayer space for the men, the first floor will be for the women, while the third floor will provide education space for children.
