Demolition site asbestos concerns addressed
The boss of a building firm behind the demolition of a social club in Burton has spoken out and addressed concerns that rubble at the site may have been contaminated with asbestos.
An investigation was launched by East Staffordshire Borough Council after complaints were made about the possible presence of asbestos. Local residents were also warned to stay clear of the site, which is private property.
However, the director of the demolition firm told the Burton Mail that there was no asbestos at the site. He said that a full asbestos survey had been carried out before the demolition work began, in accordance with legal requirements. He added that a licensed asbestos removal firm had been contracted to remove asbestos that was identified in the survey.
He commented to the paper: “All the asbestos was removed before the building was pulled down and we had a clearance certificate which was forwarded to the site’s owners and the HSE.
“I can categorically say there is no asbestos whatsoever in the rubble left behind.”
The demolition firm director also said that the materials from the building will now be recycled and used in another building project.
