Demolition work makes way for high-tech care complex

A care complex in Burton, Staffordshire, is being demolished to make way for new state-of-the-art facilities at the site. The multi-million pound project will include amenities such as a restaurant, shop, hair salon and health centre.

The demolition contractors' bulldozers have started work at the existing complex on Anglesey Road, comprising Trent and Dove Housing Association’s Anglesey Court and Staffordshire County Council’s Horace Pritchard House.

The homes once provided accommodation for the elderly and their replacement, to be called Chestnut Grange, will enable older people with deteriorating health to continue to live independently. The facilities will include high-tech computer systems that will enable hazards such as smoke, floods and gas to be closely monitored. The ‘extra-care’ housing will be composed of 67 new apartments, 52 for rent and 15 to be shared.

“We are very pleased with the progress so far and demolition is well under way,” said Steve Grocock, Trent and Dove’s director of property services. School children will be releasing balloons in an event to mark the completion of the demolition phase of the development on May 10.

The new complex is planned to open in November 2011.
