Demolition work makes way for new Bristol hospital

Bristol’s Southmead Hospital is being revamped as part of a £430m development involving the demolition of existing hospital buildings. The old facilities are being removed to make way for a new state-of-the-art site which will be known as Southmead Super Hospital.

Services, including the medical school teaching unit, had to be relocated to new temporary and permanent facilities before demolition contractors could begin work.

Ruth Brunt, chief executive of the North Bristol NHS Trust, said: "This has been something of a juggling act, ensuring that services located on the footprint of the new hospital are relocated in time for the demolition work to get under way.” The pathology buildings were completely demolished and will be replaced by a multi-storey car park for use by staff and visitors, expected to open at the end of this year.

The demolished buildings were said to be some of the most outdated hospital facilities in the country. The new site will combine services currently provided by both Southmead and Frenchay hospitals. Demolition work is set to be completed in one month’s time and the new hospital is due to open in 2014.
