Denbighshire Council embarks on demolition plans

Denbighshire County Council in North Wales has earmarked £10 million to buy and demolish around 30 run-down homes in Rhyl.

The council wants to bring in demolition contractors to raze the houses on Gronant Street and Aquarium Street, many of which are already boarded up. Council officers are hoping to avoid having to uses compulsory purchase orders and have said they are currently undertaking consultations with the local community.

Denbighshire’s leading representative for regeneration, David Thomas, said that the decrepit building would make way for new homes and green spaces, contributing towards the overall regeneration of the town.

“As well as creating green space, work will also take place to improve the standard of properties,” Councillor Thomas explained. “The proposed plan will radically change the look and feel of the area and will hopefully be a catalyst to boosting the confidence of regeneration in Rhyl.”

A number of local residents and business people have expressed their objections to the scheme, however, with one unnamed resident stating that the money should be spent on improving existing properties.

“It is going to put a lot of strain on housing,” he said, referring to the demolition. “You have families in accommodation to small for their needs and the only way to free up bigger property is by making them into flats.”
