Developers seek Sheffield works demolition
Developers in Sheffield are seeking permission to demolish all the buildings on the old Renown Works site, and rebuild a range of homes and amenities that could include flats, town houses, apartments and even a microbrewery.
The demolition and rebuilding plans from Cartwright Pickard Architects will be considered by Sheffield Council's planning board next Monday. The company hopes to raze all the buildings on the site, south of Matilda Street, which will include the shells of the former Niche nightclub, Renown Works, Albert Works and Speedwell Works.
A previous application was rejected in June this year, but the new submission has "significant" amendments, according to the architects. Just one letter of objection has so far been received against the plans, while human geography conservation body, English Heritage, has given them their endorsement.
An English Heritage spokesman said the outline of the new development "has been significantly revised and the heights, footprints and elevations, which previous sat uncomfortably with the historic buildings, now offer a more neighbourly approach."
Planning officers for Sheffield City Council have recommended that planning permission be granted on the condition that developers pay more than £290,000 as part of a Section 106 agreement, to create a designated open space for leisure purposes near the development.
