Don Valley stadium demolition begins

Demolition work has begun on Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium, the former training ground for Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill.

The ground was originally closed as part of a cost-saving plan approved by Sheffield City Council and has been replaced by Woodbourn Road refurbished track, which is run by Sheffield Hallam University.

The demolition date was announced earlier in November on the same day that the council received a 5,922 signature petition in opposition to the stadium closure, which was dismissed after debate by members of the council.

Lee Rowbotham, from the demolition firm, has said that the work is likely to take six months, with an expected finish date at some point in June 2014.

Mr Rowbotham also confirmed that much of the stadium would be recycled, with a small section of the finish line already presented to Ennis-Hill as a memento.

He told the BBC: "All the waste materials come out first and that gets sorted in to type. All the timber and such will go for recycling."

Jessica Ennis-Hill is said to have visited the site last week to watch the demolition team remove part of the track across her favoured lanes.
