Former nightclub to be demolished

Demolition plans for a former nightclub in Weston-super-Mare have been given the go-ahead by the town council.

Sands nightspot - which has been out of use for some time – will be knocked down to make way for a seafront car park. Councillors have recommended the car park plans get the green light, although it would be a temporary measure for three years.

However, the English Heritage group have claimed that the building forms a significant part of the town's character and is opposing the demolition plans.

"While a car park may be seen as more economically-viable, the loss of the facility will create a more visually unattractive open space," said a spokesman for the organisation.

The council report refutes this, claiming that the building is of low quality and does not add to the overall appearance of the area.

Kerry and Michelle Michael – who currently own the town's Grand Pier – bought the Sands property last year. The pair maintained that plans for a car park would only be temporary, as they have yet to decide how they want to develop the site.
