Hall demolition helping Staffs. school plan
A Staffordshire school is hoping that the recent demolition of an adjacent community hall will allow them to build a major extension.
Uxbridge Youth and Community Centre, in Uxbridge Street, Burton, has been successfully demolished and, though it is widely accepted that the plot will be used for an extension to Christchurch Infants’ School, school officials are awaiting final permission.
Permission was recently granted by Staffordshire County Council to build a brand-new, £20 million primary school in the borough and to turn Christchurch into a primary school, so optimism is high that the extension will be given the go ahead.
Burton councillor for East Staffordshire Borough Council and governor at Christchurch Infant’s School, Michael Rodgers, said that the demolition of the community centre would be a great help in proving the viability of the site.
The area is in desperate need of new school places, after figures showed that the birth rate in Burton had increased by 15 per cent. It is hoped that at least 1,000 new school places will be created by 2013.
Councillor Rodgers said the site of the old community centre would provide space for at least four new classrooms for Christchurch.
