Lancashire residents evacuated for asbestos fire demolition

People living around a fire-ravaged building in a Lancashire town have been evacuated from their home while suspected asbestos is investigated and appropriate asbestos demolition work takes place.

Apex House in Arley Road, Chorley was all but destroyed in a blaze last week and bulldozers were brought in almost immediately to demolish the remaining structure. After the possible asbestos was discovered, however, work was halted and 20 returning residents were once again sent away from their homes.

One local, Andy Crook, said it has been quite a testing time for the people of Arley Road.

"It's been a really up and down few days. I didn't sleep for about 36 hours after the fire and I've not been able to have a bath, so it's been pretty difficult," he said.

"Luckily I can stay with my mum, so at least I have a roof over my head. Everything's up in the air for everyone but on the positive side nobody got hurt."

Chorley Council has stepped in to help provide emergency accommodation. Their building control team is overseeing the demolition project. Spokesman, Gary Hall, said public safety was paramount.

"We're still investigating the site but there's a possibility of contamination by asbestos. If that's the case, we need to make sure the neighbouring houses are empty before demolition work can continue," he said.

"Anyone who cannot return to their home will be offered somewhere to stay. We would urge people affected to contact the council."
