Landmark Weston-super-Mare superclub to be demolished

Demolition contractors are preparing to move in to start work on Weston-super-Mare’s dilapidated Tropicana nightclub, after North Somerset Council gave the final go-ahead.

The landmark nightspot is now scheduled to be demolished, despite the last-ditch attempts of a small band of protestors who wanted to see the building restored and remarketed.

A council working group had been tasked with exploring a potential future for the building, but no suitable development could be decided on and the council has landed on demolition as the only option.

The working group examined three potential uses for the club, but none of them were deemed viable. The group’s report to the executive said, “This report concludes that while there may be some market appetite for a ‘limited form’ of development at The Tropicana, no single proposal could be definitely said to be viable and deliverable.”

The demolition work on the Tropicana – which has been vacant for 11 years – is expected to cost £700,000 and will be funded by the local council. Following the demolition the area will be restored to beach and the sea wall will be reconstructed. It is expected to be completed before the start of the 2012 summer season.
