Last family leaves demolition-marked Grimsby street

The last family has left a Grimsby community that is being razed and regenerated.

Demolition work is underway on 100 homes in Grimsby's East Marsh area to make way for an £8 million development scheme.

The last residents to leave - from number 77 Guilford Street - had a particularly emotional parting from their home, as it had housed members of their family for more than 100 years.

Walter Webster and his sister-in-law Violet Hardy said goodbye to their home last week, leaving behind a house that had been in Violet's family since 1908.

Walter, who is Violet's carer, said: "It used to be the heart of the community this street and everybody knew each other, but it has deteriorated slowly for the past decade or so and it's sad to see it go."

Demolition contractors have already moved in and work is more than half way through, with 56 houses on the route between Cope Street and Wellington Street already demolished and work well underway on the rest.

Violet's sister Moe said: "It's sad for us all as we all have so many memories of the street. We all grew up here and all went to the local schools and have fond memories."
