Linwood residents await demolition contractors
People in the Scottish town of Linwood are eagerly anticipating the arrival of demolition contractors to take down the eyesore buildings that define the town centre, so that a new multi-million pound regeneration project can get underway.
Contractors are expected to start work on demolishing the decrepit buildings within the next few weeks. They will then completely clear the prime site in order for construction to begin on the replacement project, which will include a new Tesco superstore, a public library and a new Tweedie Hall.
The corporate affairs manager for Tesco, Tony McElroy, said an exact date for the start of the demolition will be confirmed imminently.
"I am delighted that we are now in a position to progress with our proposals to transform Linwood town centre," he said. "We wholeheartedly share the community's enthusiasm to see work start on site as soon as possible and will work closely with Renfrewshire Council to ensure that we can make quick progress on demolition and construction."
Since being announced in 2007, the project hit an unexpected bump in the road when buried coffins were found on the site and then again when Tesco scaled back its plans in the midst of the recession.
Renfrewshire Council, Leader Brian Lawson said the project represented a huge vote of confidence in the future of Linwood. He said, "It's taken some time to get to this point but I am sure the wait will be worthwhile for the community."
