North London youth centre demolition underway
Demolition contractors have begun tearing down a North London youth centre to make way for a new £3 million centre.
The teenagers who have been using the Craig Park Youth Centre in Edmonton joined in with the demolition process, donning hard hats to aid the workers from construction firm Mulalley at the site.
The Enfield Independent newspaper spoke to local youth worker, Jason Thompson, who said that they had all put in a lot of work to secure the government grant that will allow the new facility to be built.
“This is massive,” he said. “We will make this youth centre one of the best in the world.”
Some 200 of the youngsters – from both the Craig Park centre and the nearby Croyland Youth Centre, which will also use the new facilities – worked on designing and planning the submission needed for the money. The new centre will incorporate music and dance studios, computer rooms and a café.
Enfield Council's cabinet member for youth, Bambos Charalmous, praised the efforts of all involved and said it would bee a major “focus for positive youth achievement” in Enfield.
The demolition work is expected to be completed by early Spring 2012.
