Old Avon building to be fully demolished in two months

The British headquarters of iconic cosmetics brand, Avon, will be fully demolished within two months, contractors have confirmed.

The Northampton building has been an integral part of the town's skyline since the 1960's, but the construction of a new, eco-friendly European head office complex nearby has left the old building defunct.

Contractors are currently working on the site and complete leveling will have taken place by the end of October. Referring to the social regeneration plans for the area around the site – on the banks of the River Nene – an Avon spokesman said, "The removal of this building will enhance the view from the new marina development for visitors."

The former Avon site, the ex-landfill site off Ransome Road, and the site of the former power station at Nunn Mills could see up to 2,000 waterside homes built as well as some shops.

Chief executive, of the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC), Peter Mawson, said they were working with the local industry to make the area something that Northampton can be proud of.

"WNDC is working with Avon and the other key landowners to breathe new life into the area, transforming derelict brownfield land into a landmark waterside development," he said.

"As part of a fresh future for Northampton's riverfront, it will provide new places for people to live, work and spend their leisure time."
