Residents welcome school site demolition

Residents of a Northampton town have welcomed demolition plans for a derelict school building.

The former Green Oaks Primary School in Kingsthorpe has been an ongoing problem in the area, and was hit by a suspected arson attack on Saturday (June 26th).

Originally part of a £90 million redevelopment plan to sell several properties to Barratt Homes, the building remained in place when the deal fell through due to the recession.

However, the latest incident has prompted the council into calling for a residential development to be built in its place.

Michael Ellis, MP for Northampton North, said such a move would be preferable for residents, but added that it may take time due to current economic circumstances.

Northamptonshire County Council, which owns the site, said it will work alongside demolition experts to have the building knocked down "within a month".

Councillor Jane Hollis said the building should have been demolished some time ago as there had been "constant problems" with the site.

"At least now the site will be demolished which will be a godsend for residents because they have feared this was going to happen for some time," she remarked.
