Scottish landmark mill to be demolished
Milton Mill in Monifieth, Angus, is to be demolished after being deemed beyond repair.
The B-listed building was badly damaged during a fire in 2006 and has since fallen into a state of decay. There had been hope that the historic site could be restored but councillors have confirmed it to be beyond saving. "I just don't believe it's possible for it to be left for housing as it stands," said David Lumgair of the Angus development standards committee.
Less than one month ago plans to develop the mill into 14 mews properties were deferred and Monifieth Community Council had requested that more time be granted for further local consultation. However, the development committee took the decision to go ahead and grant permission for the demolition contractors to be brought in. Independent councillor, Bob Spink, said, "There is a time you have to recognise that something cannot be saved."
Councillor Jean Lee, who was against the demolition approval process, commented that the mill was hugely significant for the people of Scotland. The developers of the site have said they intend to ensure the new building will reflect the old mill's appearance. They also stated that they hope to provide the local community with a project they will be proud of.
