Scunthorpe car park to be taken down over Christmas
Demolition contractors are to begin work on taking down an unsafe car park in Scunthorpe next week.
The Carlton Street multi-storey car park will be demolished in a process that is likely to take around seven weeks. North Lincolnshire Council is in advanced talks with local businesses and traders to make sure that the demolition will cause as little disruption as possible during the busy Christmas shopping period.
The process will see the work carried out at night for the first three weeks of the job, with the car park carefully dismantled from the top down, while an exclusion zone is placed around the perimeter.
The council's chief executive, Simon Driver, said that the nearest building to the site - Sucnthorpe's Central Library - would be closed from December 10 to January 9 to allow for the cumbersome work to be carried out.
"The council is sensitive to the needs of town centre businesses and other premises in the local area," Driver explained. "We are working with all those affected while work is carried out to keep disruption to a minimum. People's safety is of paramount importance and unfortunately we can't avoid the temporary closure of Central Library."
The council is hoping the vacant space will attract retail development to the town that will complement land being vacated by the demolition of the neighbouring Scunthorpe Leisure Centre.
