Scunthorpe club demolished to save costs

The demolition of a disused Scunthorpe club is to be completed within the next month, in an effort to make the surrounding area more attractive and cut unnecessary costs.

The Club 200 has been an empty eyesore in Church Square for the last four years, since the plot on which it stands was bought by North Lincolnshire Council for £800,000, using cash from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

The bodies recently decided to demolish the structure in order to eliminate the continuing £45,000 annual costs of maintaining it. Work had already been undertaken to demolish the interior of the club and contractors moved in this week to begin work on the exterior.

North Lincolnshire Council leader, Mark Kirk, said, ""It is essential that we demolish the former nightclub to make way for future investment. We are looking to create a programme of events and activities throughout the year that will attract local people and visitors to the town centre and shop."

He said the space will become an integral venue for their plans and make a far more attractive area to welcome visitors coming into the town on Brigg Road.

Businesses in the area welcomed the removal of the eyesore. Ken Cross, owner of the adjacent KM Cross car showroom, said, "Although there will be dust and noise created for a couple of weeks by the demolition, it will eventually enhance the most historic and upmarket part of the town centre."
