South Shields eyesore set for demolition

Demolition work on a pub which has been standing derelict in South Tyneside got underway yesterday (June 28th).

The General Havelock pub in Chapter Row in the centre of South Shields is being knocked down after closing its doors for good last year.

Demolition contractors expect the work to be completed in around two weeks, with a planned excavation of the main floor scheduled to take place towards the end of the job.

Businesses close to the pub site were sent a letter by the demolition contractors outlining the proposed work, which had been given the go-ahead by the council in December.

"We have carefully considered the project in conjunction with South Tyneside Council and have a detailed health, safety and environmental plan in place to ensure public safety is maintained and there are no restrictions to your business," it read.

Councillor Michael Clare, South Tyneside Council's lead member for jobs, enterprise and regeneration, said the organisation had bought the site for "regeneration purposes".

"We will continue to transform the borough for the benefit of businesses and residents," Mr Clare commented.
