Stanwell Health Centre Demolition Delayed

Residents in Stanwell, Surrey, have noted a distinct lack of activity at the site of a health centre where demolition work was due to start last Monday, April 5.

Stanwell Health Centre, in Hadrian's Way, is scheduled in for controlled demolition to make way for the new St David's Health Centre as well as Stanwell library, a cafe and a pharmacy.

Spelthorne Council claimed that work had begun on time, but that builders were initially working on the inside of the centre and undertaking preliminary building demolition work. A council spokeswoman also stated that demolition work would in fact start on Monday 12 April once the area had been suitably boarded up in preparation.

By moving the start of demolition work back by just one week the council have made themselves vulnerable to criticism. The project appears to have faced a series of setbacks leaving local residents pessimistic about its progress. "Some of us have lost faith in the council over this, and take the things they say with a pinch of salt," said Andrew McLuskey of Diamedes Avenue, who visited the site on 9 April and saw no sign of activity. The new centre and facilities are due to be completed in May next year.
