Tim Henman wins permission to demolish old cottage
Retired tennis champion, Tim Henman, has won permission from his local authority to demolish an old cottage on his Oxfordshire estate to make way for a new annexe for his home.
The former British Number One had sought permission from South Oxfordshire District Council for the demolition of Filberts Cottage, which sits in the grounds of his mid-18th century Grade II-listed home, Filberts, in Aston Tirrold near Didcot.
He was granted permission by the council's planning committee at a meeting that he attended in person, in order to justify his plans.
An objection to the demolition had been lodged by Aston Tirrold Parish Council, who had raised concerns over the loss of "an older established dwelling, which will impact on the historic street scene".
The county planning officers, however, believed that Henman's plans for his annexe - which will incorporate guest accommodation and a gym - were very clear and in keeping with the area.
Head of planning, Adrian Duffield, explained, "The development lies within the well defined confines of the built-up part of Aston Tirrold and there is no objection to the development."
He added, "The scale and design of the development is sympathetic to the character and appearance of the conservation area and the setting of surrounding listed buildings and the scheme is otherwise generally in accordance with development plan policies."
