Uncertainty over Perth City Hall plans
There is still uncertainty surrounding the proposed demolition of Perth City Hall in Scotland, it has emerged.
It was recently decided in a unanimous council vote that the B-listed Edwardian building should be bulldozed to make way for open civic square.
However, the executive agency of the government Historic Scotland is not yet fully convinced such a move is advisable, the Courier reports.
A spokeswoman for the organisation said Perth City Hall is a landmark building which is of more than just "local significance", stating that Historic Scotland would need to be sure demolition was the best way to proceed.
"Now that Perth and Kinross Council has reached a view, they will need to consult formally with Historic Scotland," she commented.
"We will look very carefully at the justification for their planned proposal for demolition."
Perth and Kinross Council leader Ian Miller getting rid of Perth City Hall would open up St John’s Kirk, which he feels Historic Scotland should focus on.
"It is an A-listed building and that should be their priority," Mr Miller remarked.
Councillors are urging the watchdog to make a relatively fast decision, as a completion date of 2014 has already been proposed.
