Demolition of the former Reality Site, Holbeck, Leeds
In March 2008 the Reality site demolition and asbestos removal commenced in Leeds. There were three principle buildings to be demolished.
Building 1 was a two-storey reinforced concrete frame dating from the early / mid 1950’s. The roof void contained significant quantities of asbestos which required careful removal but under tight time deadlines. Archive photographs showed the foundations to be in-situ cast piles and reinforced pile caps.
Building 2 was built in 1979 and was a five storey reinforced concrete framed building with a lightweight steel framed roof. Floors were insitu cast ‘waffle floors’. Foundations are again piles and pile caps. The building was connected across a public highway by conveyor bridge which required careful removal as part of the demolition works
Building 3 was a modern steel portal framed industrial unit. All concrete / brick materials arising from the works were to be removed off site. In order to maximise the environmental recycling of the materials, they were crushed to 6F2 quality. In excess of 80,000 tonnes of materials were recycled and sold off site during the ten month contract period.
